Mike Gundy questions NCAA’s ability to actually block joint spring practices ...0

News by : (SATURDAY DOWN SOUTH) -

Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy had a great idea recently, and he stands by that idea. He’s also not a fan of the NCAA trying to put its foot down on the matter.

Recently, the idea of joint spring practices picked up traction across the country. Deion Sanders at Colorado said his program was actively working toward hosting Syracuse football in a comprehensive joint spring session, including a spring game scrimmage.

As for Gundy, he had pitched the idea of using the spring practice window to bring back the Bedlam Series vs. Oklahoma. At a press conference on Tuesday, Gundy said he’s still all for that idea for Oklahoma State.

“I mentioned it the other day, I just thought of the deal with OU — I think it’s a good deal. I would like to do it, I would like to practice against them,” said Gundy.

Unfortunately, the FBS oversight committee recently ruled it was a no dice for any team hoping to arrange joint spring practices this year. The reasons seemed flimsy to many, especially for an endeavor that was gaining widespread support from many, and Gundy questioned if the NCAA is even able to ban the process.

While there is currently no indication that Colorado and Syracuse (or any other program) would simply spurn the ruling, Gundy asked what the NCAA would realistically do if a team just did a joint practice anyway:

“I’ll be honest with you, I’m not going to waste my time on who’s going to determine what the rules are anymore, because essentially there are not really enough of them to follow. And I’m not even sure how they have grounds to say you can’t do it.  If somebody just goes and does it, what are you going to do to them?” Gundy concluded with a shrug.

Like the rest of us, Mike Gundy thinks the idea of the NCAA (or anybody else in CFB?) trying to enforce a rule of any kind these days is pretty funny. pic.twitter.com/icjzjVHkpa

In all likelihood, the idea of joint practices is probably going to be a non-factor sooner than later as the NCAA seemingly loses more and more power in this era of athletics.
