A man out of the San Bernardino area was arrested Monday evening after a dramatic chase through Riverside County and into Escondido that ended in a crash that sent multiple people to local hospitals.
The pursuit began when officers in San Bernardino tried to stop a sedan on Monday afternoon for a vehicle code violation and incorrectly concluded that there was also a possible kidnapping victim into the car.
The driver drove off, and police chased him into Riverside County on the 215 freeway and then on to the 15. San Bernardino police followed the car onto the 15 in Murrieta, but eventually handed over the chase to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office and the California Highway Patrol, the Press-Enterprise reported.
Members of multiple law enforcement agencies then chased the car south through Riverside County and into north San Diego County, where the driver crashed into another vehicle and fled on foot, where CHP reportedly took him into custody in a field near the freeway.
Three people were injured in the incident: the driver of the sedan, the passenger, and the driver of the car he hit, according to Onscene.Media. All were transported to local hospitals.
However, police discovered after arresting the driver and interviewing the passenger that she had not been kidnapped.
The suspect, who has not yet been identified, was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run, felony pursuit or evading police, and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
The chase ended when the suspect vehicle crashed in Escondido at the 15 Freeway’s Del Lago Boulevard off-ramp, according to reporting from independent news video provider OnScene.TV. Carrington said the suspect crashed into the back of another car as traffic slowed down and fled on foot before he was arrested.
Three people were hospitalized, including the suspect, his passenger and a driver from the other vehicle involved in the collision, OnScene reported.
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office in a statement said that agency’s Aviation Unit was asked at 5:54 p.m. to assist the San Bernardino Police Department in the pursuit.
The air unit and a sheriff’s K-9 unit located the suspect vehicle on the 215 at Eastridge Avenue in Riverside. Ultimately, as the pursuit ended in Escondido, the suspect fled from the vehicle but was “taken into custody without incident and turned over to the San Bernardino Police Department,” a sheriff’s statement said.
