Madi Prewett is still learning how to navigate her married life with husband Grant Troutt.
“That’s been my downfall, is when I’m just reactive,” Prewett, 29, said on the Monday, June 30, episode of the “Stay True” podcast. “Like, a friend does something or even when I’m in a relationship, someone does something that angers me or frustrates me or it hurts my feelings. When I’m reactive in that moment, that’s when my mind is led by sin instead of led by the spirit.”
She continued, “That’s when we have to be careful. … I’ve learned this in my marriage and in my relationship with my husband. When he does something that hurts my feelings, most of the time it is not going to be a fruitful or good, godly conversation, if I tell him in that moment.”
Prewett noted that she likes to “take a second,” which she has coined the “pause and pray,” as she collects her thoughts.
Madi Prewett Details Husband Grant's 'Radical Transformation'
“You say, ‘Holy Spirit, show me where I need to own my part. Holy Spirit, show me how I need to communicate this. How I need to share where I’ve been hurt,’” Prewett said. “Make it about yourself instead of making it about the other person where you’re pointing fingers. What I’ve learned is like, it’s never helpful if I’m like, ‘You did this and you did that. You this, this and that.’”
She continued, “But it’s more helpful if I’m like, ‘Hey, when you said that, I know that’s probably not how you meant it, but this is how I took it. And this is how it made me feel, and I wanted to be honest about that and give you the opportunity to explain a little bit more about what you meant by that.’ Having a neutral moment like that, where it’s not like finger-pointing, [is] super helpful.”
Prewett tied the knot with Troutt in October 2022 after competing on Peter Weber’s season 24 of The Bachelor. The couple welcomed their daughter, Hosanna, in January.
Prewett’s comments about her marriage come one week after she opened up about her and Troutt’s differing experiences with sex and masturbation before their wedding. Prewett, however, noted that Troutt has changed.
“I am so thankful that when Grant had a radical transformation with Jesus, and when he started bringing accountability in his life and he chose to pursue a lifestyle of purity,” she said in a June episode of her podcast. “He wasn’t perfect. Did he have moments of falling short? He did. But he chose to pursue purity and because of that we were able to then at the altar when we gave ourselves to each other and to God, body, soul and spirit, we had such a joy and such a peace because we knew that was something we had pursued individually and together.”
