FULLERTON — The Foothill boys volleyball team picked up perhaps its most impressive win of the season by defeating Sunny Hills in four sets, 19-25, 25-14, 25-19, 25-19, on Wednesday night at Sunny Hills High.
Foothill (9-4 overall) currently sits atop the Freeway League standings while Sunny Hills (13-5) is 5-0 in Crestview League play.
Foothill coach Chris Lee was pleased with his group’s performance.
“This is definitely the biggest win of the season,” Lee said. “We just got a couple of players who are now eligible after the sit-out period (ended). So, we played yesterday (against Santa Margarita) and it was kind of like the first game of the season in a way, because we were still working in pieces.
“So, you know, there was a lot of subbing in and out and a little bit of confusion on the court, but tonight we really put it together against a good team.”
Opposite JJ Barraza (six kills, six blocks), outside hitter Max Chang (four kills) and libero Huston Tosh (12 digs) are some of the new players that Lee hopes can continue to contribute down the stretch.
The Knights attack was led by Colt Thorne and Luas Cuellar, who had eight kills each, while Caden Epperson added seven kills.
The Lancers were able to get out in front and won the first set thanks to Lucas Saab, Augustine Cho and Seth Lee, but Sunny Hills coach Albert Soliguen said his team’s errors were too much to overcome.
“After the first set, we had the energy,” he said, “but then once we started racking up the errors, the energy just left us. There was no more energy and it just seemed like a mental battle, and then we couldn’t muster up anything and create any momentum for us after that point. And really the inconsistencies just continued. It continued and ate us up.”
The Lancers’ attack was stifled by the Knights at the net, and even the good swings for Sunny Hills were off target for much of the match.
“We normally hit these shots, but tonight wasn’t the night and we also got shut down by Foothill’s block,” Soliguen said. “We did a good job in the first set tooling the block, but once they kind of figured out where we were dishing the sets out, our best hitters got shut down.”
“They definitely made a couple more mistakes, but I think our blocking kind of affected them a little bit,” Lee said. “JJ was able to change the game a little bit, and we got a couple of big guys, so we definitely affected their offense just a little bit. And then they had a couple more errors as a result of it, but you know, that’s kind of what’s gonna happen.”
The Knights collected 16 total blocks and middle blocker Ethan Fernandez chipped in three.
