Samsung Electronics is mourning the unexpected loss of its co-CEO, Han Jong-Hee, who passed away at the age of 63 due to a heart attack. Han's tenure at Samsung was marked by significant contributions to the consumer electronics sector, where he led the mobile division and played a pivotal role in establishing Samsung as a global leader in visual display technology . His sudden death has raised concerns about leadership continuity within the company, particularly as it navigates a challenging economic landscape.
He was appointed co-vice chairman and CEO in 2022, overseeing both consumer electronics and mobile device operations.
Samsung, a global leader in technology, operates under dual CEO leadership for its two major business units—consumer products and semiconductor divisions.
Following Han's passing, Jun Young Hyun, the company’s semiconductor division CEO, will assume Han’s responsibilities as the sole CEO.
On the other hand, According to market research firm Omdia, Samsung maintained its position as the global TV market leader in 2024, with a 28.3% market share.

During an annual meeting with investors last week, which he chaired, Han apologized for the performance of Samsung stock and warned of a difficult 2025 because of uncertainties around the economic policies of major economies, according to Reuters. He added that Samsung would seek “meaningful” mergers and acquisitions deals this year to support the company’s growth.
Just last week, Han chaired Samsung’s annual shareholders meeting, where he apologised for the company’s recent stock performance. According to Reuters, he also cautioned investors that 2025 would be a challenging year.
The tech giant has been grappling with challenges in its underperforming chip business while navigating trade uncertainties. Its semiconductor division has fallen behind Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and SK Hynix in the global AI chip market.
Han joined Samsung in 1988 and ascended through various ranks, ultimately becoming co-CEO in 2022 . His recent efforts included addressing shareholder concerns regarding stock performance and outlining strategic plans for mergers and acquisitions aimed at fostering growth . The absence of an immediate successor adds uncertainty to Samsung's future direction. Jun Young-hyun will now assume sole CEO responsibilities after being appointed co-CEO just prior to Han's passing.
