A London-based think tank on Thursday ranked San Diego as the third happiest city in the United States and the 34th worldwide.
The Institute for Quality of Life released its sixth annual Happy City Index with 200 cities ranked.
European and Asian cities led the list, with the first American one — New York — ranking 17th. Minneapolis was the next U.S. city on the list at 30th place.
San Diego ranked between two historic European cities, Lyon in France and Bruges in Belgium, with high marks for governance and environment.
Only 18 cities in the United States made the list, with Houston ranked lowest, tying with Ankara, Turkey, at 198th place.
The cities were ranked by international volunteers on 82 indicators in six categories: citizens, governance, environment, economy, health and mobility.
The think tank said the ranking is intended to “recognize a group of cities committed to cultivating and growing happiness, where education, inclusive policies, the economy, mobility, environmental protection, access to green areas, and innovation are not only important components of official policies but are also evident in the solutions implemented.”
But it also cautioned that “no single city can be labelled as the absolute best at ensuring the happiness of its citizens over the long haul.”
