A customer (@MotherofWords) revealed what ruined her in-store experience at the grocery chain.

The customer blasted Kroger for a huge line of shoppers waiting to use self-checkout, in an angry X post.

“@kroger these self check out lines are DOWN the aisle cause y’all don’t have anybody working the registers,” she said.

The shopper also suggested the chain should hire more in-person checkout staff to solve the issue.

“If I didn’t need these groceries I would leave this cart full in the middle of this store, cause the shrinkage cost could’ve gone to pay a cashier,” she added.

Kroger responded to the shopper’s raging complaint and suggested it would take her proposal into account.

“Hello there! Thanks for bringing this to our attention,” Kroger said.

“Kindly send us a private message and provide us with your phone number, email address, and the store address you are referring to so we can forward your feedback to our leadership.

“Thank you and have a great day!”

This shopper has not been the only person to rage about self-checkouts.

Aldi shoppers slammed the chain for a new crackdown at their kiosks.

One customer was enraged at a 15 item limit for self services kiosks at their local Aldi store.

“I prefer self-checkout but at my Aldi they don’t let me if I have 15 items or more,” the shopper said.

“They recently implemented this. It makes no sense at a grocery store.

“Now all the self checkouts are unused, no one just buys less than 15 items.”

Another shopper commented questioned the rule.

“What are they gonna do if you use self checkout with more than 15 items? Arrest you?” they asked.

Latest self-checkout changes

Retailers are evolving their self-checkout strategy in an effort to speed up checkout times and reduce theft.

Walmart shoppers were shocked when self-checkout lanes at various locations were made available only for Walmart+ members.

Other customers reported that self-checkout was closed during specific hours, and more cashiers were offered instead.

While shoppers feared that shoplifting fueled the updates, a Walmart spokesperson revealed that store managers are simply experimenting with ways to improve checkout performance.

One bizarre experiment included an RFID-powered self-checkout kiosk that would stop the fiercely contested receipt checks.

However, that test run has been phased out.

At Target, items are being limited at self-checkout.

Last fall, the brand surveyed new express self-checkout lanes across 200 stores with 10 items or less for more convenience.

As of March 2024, this policy has been expanded across 2,000 stores in the US.

Shoppers have also spotted their local Walmart stores restricting customers to 15 items or less to use self-checkout machines.
