The shooting stars might be fading right about now, but plenty more wildflowers are just beginning their 2025 shows at Low Gap Regional Park in Ukiah.
And some of the flowers that begin blooming in March include the delicate California Fawn Lily, rows of which often greet hikers as they begin climbing the switchbacks of the City View Trail, or wave from the hillside at those who turned right at the bench and headed down the Canyon Creek Trail instead.
Also blooming now are many yellows flowers such as the cheerful Western Buttercup, and orange ones such as Fiddlenecks and California poppies.
To see what other beauties are blooming right now in one of the best places in Mendocino County to see a variety of wildflowers (at least 40 different species!), you can join another walk hosted by the Sanhedrin Chapter of the California Native Plant Society this Saturday.
The second of three such walks planned this spring, the one scheduled for March 22 begins at 10 a.m. in the popular park located across Low Gap Road from Ukiah High School.
The hosts of the walk ask participants to “meet at the tables near the tennis courts at 10 a.m. Wear good hiking shoes and dress for the weather, although the hike will be cancelled if it’s raining.”
According to the latest forecast from the National Weather Service office in Eureka, there is “a 20-percent chance of rain before 11 a.m.” on Saturday, then the weather is expected to turn “partly sunny, with a high near 64.” After that, the NWS predicts “drier and warmer weather (for) Sunday into early next week.”
If you plan to attend Saturday’s wildflower walk, the hosts request you “please RSVP so we know how many attendees to expect. RSVP by completing this online form: forms.gle/mMaQfz7t1EgoqsPh9
The hosts also note that “this event is free, but our Low Gap wildflower brochures will be available for $1.00 (correct change, please).
Another final wildflower hike will be held at Low Gap Park on April 19 to follow the progression of spring. For more information, contact Cathy Monroe at cathymonroe@gmail.com.
