‘Always a problem’ – Serena Williams’ ex-coach claims Coco Gauff may never solve one glaring weakness in her game ...Middle East

Coco Gauff is entering the Miami Open looking to reignite her 2025 season.

The American tennis star has struggled since the United Cup in early January, unable to be consistent, and Serena Williams‘ ex-coach Rennae Stubbs believes she knows why.

It’s been a couple of months to forget for Gauff who has suffered multiple early exits across several WTA tournaments since the Australian Open.

After a quarter-final defeat to Paula Badosa in Melbourne, the 21-year-old suffered further losses to Martha Kostyuk in Doha before losing to McCartney Kessler 6-4, 7-5 in Dubai.

Indian Wells did not offer any reassurance to Guaff either as she was upset by Belinda Bencic in the fourth round.

It’s form that leaves many wondering what’s gone wrong for the 2023 US Open champion, and Stubbs has shared her own concerns over Gauff’s game.

The Australian said on The Rennae Stubbs Podcast: “Her technique fails under pressure and when you’re playing outside – a lot of her success last year and even at the beginning of this year was played indoors – there’s no wind or variables.

“When you have a technique that is questionable at times, whether it be the second serve and the service motion, and the service grip, all that sort of stuff and the forehand, it affects your game more.”

Stubbs went further, claiming Gauff’s forehand issues may never be solved, and that it’s up to her to adapt her game to mitigate her weakness.

“Her technique on her forehand is always going to be a problem for her going forehand. So it’s a matter of can she get over those humps. Can she get through the tough three-set match, which she didn’t last week,” Stubbs added.

“She is going to have unbelievable support in Miami. And maybe this is the breakthrough she needs going into the clay, which we know she plays well on.

“It is a work in progress. It is going to be a work in progress with the serve and her forehand for the rest of her career. And when she loses that is why she is going to lose, that’s why we always talk about it.”

Rennae Stubbs, who was critical of Gauff, is a former coach of Serena Williams

For Gauff, she believes talk about her form is exaggerated, as she brushed off criticism when asked about her form in general ahead of Indian Wells a few weeks ago.

“Everyone makes a bigger deal than what it is,” Gauff told reporters.

“I’ll lose more matches back to back. It’s going to happen.”

There is no better place for Gauff to kick-start her season than the Miami Open, which is her home tournament and one she has never won.

Danielle Collins was the winner last year when she beat Elena Rybakina 7-6, 6-3 to claim the title.

Along with Gauff, Mirra Andreeva, Aryna Sabalenka, and Iga Swiatek are all dubbed as favourites for the title.

Andreeva heads into Miami Open looking to complete the Sunshine Double, after recently claiming the Indian Wells title.

The tournament sees $8.9 million up for grabs with the singles champion taking home $1.12 million.

Play is already underway with the singles final taking place on March 29.
