A LITTLE-known method can help drivers save on gas – thanks to four scientifically proven steps that will get more out of each tank.
Recently, a driver took to TikTok to give his viewers a top tip on how to get more bang for their buck.

To begin with, Brown’s first tip is to simply fill up first thing in the morning.
He said: “All of you are getting ripped off when you’re filling up your gas tank for your car, and here’s why.”
“Here are four things you need to know scientifically to get you more gas while filling up your tank.”
“Gas expands when it’s warm, and it becomes more dense when it’s colder, along with everything else.”
“If you purchase your gas later in the day after the sun has warmed up the ground, all of the gas under the tank is gonna be expanded, and you’re actually getting less gas.”
He’s not the only one who states this, as GoBankingRates, a leading personal finance destination, agrees that the morning is the best time to do it.
However, the afternoon or evening are both great times too, as, like the morning, the evening is cool – giving you better fuel efficiency.
Brown says another mistake people regularly make is putting the gas nozzle clip on the highest setting and filling up too fast.
Brown said: “Second is to fill up slowly.
“Don’t put it on the fastest setting, even though I know you’re in a hurry. … Put it on the lowest setting. The faster you’re pumping the gas, the more of it is turning into vapor.”
He added: “All gas pumps have a vapor return line, which puts the vapor back into the tank. So you’re actually paying for gas you’re not even getting.”
Brown also recommends drivers treat their half-empty tank like a fully empty tank.
He said: “Gas evaporates as it comes in contact with the air.
“So, if you’re driving around with an empty tank, it’s evaporating quicker and quicker the lower it gets. That’s because the air is going into the tank.
“Instead, it’s recommended to fill up at half a tank if you want to get the best fuel efficiency.”
That means that the lowest you should have your tank before refilling is a quarter of a tank.
Letting the gas tank hit empty can lead to a damaged fuel pump, debris collecting in the empty tank, and an inaccurate fuel gauge, although most cars have a vapor recovery system, which captures the vapors emitted from the fuel pump.
Brown’s final tip is to avoid filling up when you “see one of those trucks filling up the tanks underground at the gas station.”
He added: “It’s dumping a ton of gasoline into the tanks under the ground at the gas station, which is gonna turn up all the dirt and everything.
“And if you get gas right then, it’s gonna be putting dirt and debris into your tank.”
In the comments section: one person wrote: “My uncle owns a gas station and you are 100% correct about not pumping while fuel trucks are delivering.”
There was plenty of agreement on Brown’s other tips, too.
Another commenter said: “The slow pumping is absolutely correct.”
And a third added: “Also, the car’s fuel pump uses gas as a lubricant and coolant. If you drive around often with low fuel the pump can overheat and fail.”
What happens if you put the wrong fuel in your tank?
Dwanye Saunders, the owner of Genuine Automotive & Diesel in Austin, Texas, said the common mix up isn't as dire as people think.
He told The U.S. Sun in an exclusive interview there are things drivers should look out for at the pumps to avoid putting the wrong fuel in your tank, and what to do if it happens.
The first thing he noted is that most gas stations make it very difficult to fill a gas-powered car with diesel. At the pumps, size does matter.
“The nozzle for the diesel pump is usually much bigger than a gasoline pump,” he said.
“So, it’s pretty hard to put diesel in a gas tank, it’s actually easier to accidentally put gasoline in a diesel engine.”
If the wrong fuel type is used, drivers will know right away, as the engine will run incredibly rough before shutting off. When that happens, it’s important to not try and start the vehicle again, as it pushes the fuel further into the system. Forcing the wrong fuel through an ill-equipped engine can cost thousands in repairs, or even merit an engine replacement.
Instead, it’s best to have your vehicle towed to a trusted mechanic, where they’ll begin repairs.
“A good mechanic would drain the fuel tank and flush the lines with fresh gasoline, maybe run some fuel system cleaner through it and it’s usually not detrimental,” said Saunders.
