Cat food recalled over bird flu concerns

H5N1 infections in two cats from Colorado and New York who consumed the affected products. The distribution of this potentially contaminated food spanned several states, including California, Colorado, New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington.

LLC recalled batches of their raw cat food for possibly leading to bird flu in pets. On March 15, a second pet food company issued a similar recall also out of precaution for possible bird flu contamination.

Savage Pet announced a recall of two its products "because it has the potential to contain H5N1, also known as bird flu," according to the recall on the FDA's website.

USDA has announced a $1 billion plan to combat outbreaks. The initiative will primarily support poultry farmers while also easing regulations on backyard coops to lessen the strain on the egg industry. The virus continues to spread, infecting cattle and other animals, including cats and rodents.

Symptoms of bird flu include “fever, lethargy, low appetite, reddened or inflamed eyes, discharge from the eyes and nose, difficulty breathing, and neurological signs like tremors, stiff body movements, seizure, lack of coordination, or blindness,” according to the FDA.

The implications of such recalls extend beyond feline health; they also pose risks to humans who handle these products. Although no human infections have been directly linked to this recall thus far, the FDA emphasizes the importance of practicing good hygiene when dealing with raw pet foods . Symptoms indicative of bird flu in cats include fever, lethargy, and respiratory complications.
