TEMPE — New Arizona Cardinals pass rusher Josh Sweat has a PhD in sacking the quarterback.

Across Sweat’s seven-year career, he’s registered 43 sacks in the regular season and another 5.0 in nine playoff games — 2.5 coming in Philadelphia’s Super Bowl win over the Kansas City Chiefs this past February.

He’s had a knack for getting after most team’s quarterbacks over the years.

Unless his name is quarterback Kyler Murray.

In the three meetings the two had against one another, Sweat was held in check by Murray’s elusiveness paired with Arizona’s offensive line play.

That hasn’t been lost on Sweat, either, especially when talking about their two most recent battles.

Two years in a row. Two misses.

“He’s a beast. I ain’t going to lie and it’s hard for me to say, he’s the guy that I missed twice. I missed him twice,” Sweat told Arizona Sports’ Burns & Gambo on Thursday. “Like I had him and I just couldn’t get him down twice. I don’t miss tackles. Not to boost myself, but I don’t miss tackles. This dude made me miss two sacks. Now, I’m going to never be able to do it and actually sack him, though.

“I’ve seen him play. I know what type of guy he is,” Sweat added during his introductory press conference. “I’m excited to be around him. He can go for sure.”

As for the near-misses Sweat is talking about?

Murray was in his bag.

The first miss came in Week 5 of the 2022 season. The Cardinals entered the matchup 2-2 after a win over the Carolina Panthers.

Arizona didn’t get the win over Philadelphia that day, but Murray got the better of Sweat and completed the pass to former wide receiver A.J. Green.

The second clip happened in Week 17 of the 2023 season. It marked Murray’s seventh game back from a torn ACL suffered the year prior and the return of head coach Jonathan Gannon to Philadelphia where he was its defensive coordinator from 2021-22.

That marked Murray’s best game of his return season, setting season highs in passing percentage (80.6%), touchdowns (three) and passer rating (116.7).

The shake-and-bake of Sweat before finding James Conner for the one-handed touchdown grab and stealing a win in Philadelphia just added to the day for Murray and Co.
