The Oscar winner joined the popular social media show SubwayTakes, which asks passengers on the New York City subway to reveal their most controversial opinions, to harp on a topic that really grinds her gears.
The Lord of the Rings star started strong in the video posted on March 13, declaring that “leaf blowers need to be eradicated from the face of the Earth.”
“So he’d been blowing that leaf probably from five blocks away, it had finally got onto the beach and his employer had said, ‘if you don’t f—ing get rid of that leaf, you’re done.’ But the stupidity!” Blanchett said emphatically, pointing out that she sees leaf blowers as “a metaphor for what’s wrong with us as a species.”
Blanchett explained that, ultimately, the wind is going to blow things back to where they were, before launching further into a tirade against the gardening equipment.

Blanchett expounded further on the negatives, going into the reasons why she feels they’re not just bad for the environment but also bad for social interactions and individual health.
Fans on Instagram found the exchange delightfully odd, commenting, “She has a visceral, everlasting hatred for leaf blowers and I find that fascinating,” and “Didn’t expect to see Cate Blanchett’s hot take be about leaf blowers.”
