CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- An innocent bystander was shot, two people were arrested, and 18 citations were issued following a weekend of street takeovers, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

Authorities said on Friday, March 7, about 100 vehicles and people participated in illegal street takeovers in Charlotte. Then on Saturday, several people at an event at the Rockingham Dragway went to Charlotte afterward to perform illegal street takeovers.

Between 11 p.m. on Saturday and 5:30 a.m. on Sunday, CMPD said roughly 400 vehicles and people started fires, shot fireworks, lit flares and performed stunts around multiple public roadways and parking lots across Charlotte.

According to CMPD, those areas were:

9500 block of South Boulevard Wilkinson Boulevard/Sam Wilson Road 2500 block of Sardis Road North Kenilworth Avenue/I-277 4900 block of Gibbon Road 8100 block of University City Boulevard University City Boulevard/Neal Road Wanted: Burglar ‘taunts security camera with dance’ as group breaks into vehicles in York County

CMPD said while officers were breaking up the group along the 8100 block of University City Blvd, they moved over to Neal Road at University City Blvd to start a new takeover. Shots were fired and a nearby driver was struck by a bullet in the hip/abdomen at the new location.

CMPD said the person was an innocent bystander and was not involved in the street takeovers.

Throughout the weekend, CMPD made two arrests, issued 18 citations, seized five vehicles, and found one reported stolen vehicle.

According to arrest records, 21-year-old Cortavian Winston and 23-year-old Ki'Juan Thompson were booked into the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office for resisting a public officer and flee/elude arrest with a motor vehicle. Thompson was also charged with hit-and-run.

Winston was issued a $5,000 bond and Thompson was given a $12,000 bond. Both suspects have since been released from the Mecklenburg County Detention Center.
