Imperial Beach Mayor Paloma Aguirre said she had renewed hope that the ongoing environmental crisis in South Bay will get federal help after Environmental Protection Agency chief Lee Zeldin posted about it on social media.
I was just briefed that Mexico is dumping large amounts of raw sewage into the Tijuana River, and it’s now seeping into the U.S.This is unacceptable. Mexico MUST honor its commitments to control this pollution and sewage!
— Lee Zeldin (@epaleezeldin) March 9, 2025Zeldin’s post came after Imperial Beach Mayor Paloma Aguirre wrote a letter to the EPA asking them to reconsider a previous decision rejecting further federal action on the sewage crisis under the Biden administration.
Zeldin had said during his confirmation hearings that he would review the sewage crisis.
Aguirre urged a new federal review for potential Superfund designation for the Tijuana River Valley, which would make federal clean-up resources available to the region, bypassing bureaucratic delays.
Aguirre said she is grateful that national attention is on the issue.
“This kind of national focus is exactly what it will take to fix the outrageous sewage catastrophe,” she said in a statement. “We’ve been ignored by administrations in Washington for years, so I’m grateful Administrator Zeldin is shining a new light on the sewage crisis.”
The statement added that she has invited the EPA to come to San Diego to take a tour of South Bay to understand the full extent of the issue.
“However this issue got to Zeldin’s attention, I’m grateful EPA is shining a light on our sewage crisis. South County has been let down by Democratic and Republican administrations alike, and I’ll work with anyone — Republican or Democrat — willing to help South County get the clean air, safe water and healthy beaches our families deserve.”
