Mohammad Hafeez's comments came during the discussion on Tapmad in Pakistan. The former player of the team talked about why the cricket in the nation is going down while sitting in a panel, which featured Shoaib Akhtar and Shoaib Malik as well.
Pakistan National Cricket Team started the tournament with a loss against the New Zealand National Cricket Team and then was at the receiving end of a thrashing against the India National Cricket Team. Their last league game was washed out due to rain as they became the first host nation to not win any game in the ICC tournament.
"Winning an ICC event creates inspiration among the fans, among the younger generation. I am a big fan of 90s players. But when it comes to legacy, they left nothing for Pakistan. Neither did they win an ICC event in 1996, 1999, and 2003, they lost badly. They could have won a final, but we lost badly.

Mohammad Hafeez further added that winning the 2009 T20 World Cup and the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy gave inspiration to the next generation and had an impact on Pakistan Cricket. He added:
"Today people idealize Babar Azam. The reason is that even though he didn't have a big impactful role in that event but he was present in it. And the 2017 ICC trophy made a big impact on Pakistan's cricket. So, unfortunately, the players of the 90s couldn't win the ICC event."

Mohammad Hafeez's comments didn't go well with Shoaib Akhtar as he gave a befitting reply to his fellow penalist. He stressed that Pakistan's stunning ODI record against India is only because of their generation. He said:
