Tottenham vs Manchester United will be the sixth all-English final in UEFA competitions, but how many finals have there been that involve two teams from the same country?
Following Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United’s progress to the 2025 edition of the Europa League final, we are all set for another showpiece event in continental competition between two teams from the same nation.
Over the history of the two main European competitions – the European Cup, later rebranded as the Champions League and the UEFA Cup, later rebranded the Europa League – there have been 19 finals involving two teams from the same country.
Most of them have occurred in recent years, because in the early iterations of these European competitions, it was almost always the case that only one club was allowed from each national association. For example, in the entire history of the European Cup when it was known as such (from 1955 to 1991), not even one final pitted teams from the same country against one another. Since the rebrand to the Champions League and the subsequent change to the format, there have been eight one-nation finals.
Only five countries have produced even one final in UEFA competitions between two teams from their league, but which nation is responsible for the most? Read on to find out.
Number of Single-Nations Finals by Country
Six – England Five – Italy and Spain Two – Germany (or West Germany) One – PortugalOnly UEFA-recognised competitions have been considered here: European Cup/Champions League, UEFA Cup/Europa League and Cup Winners’ Cup (although there were no single-nation finals in the CWC).
The Inter-Cities Fairs Cup has not been included as it’s not recognised as a UEFA competition. Note: All three Inter-Cities Fairs Cup finals involving teams from the same nation were all-Spanish finals.
England – Six
Spurs vs Man Utd will be the sixth all-English final in the history of UEFA club competitions. This final will take England clear as the outright leader at the top of the above list.
The first ever single-nation final was an all-English affair between Spurs and Wolves in the first season of the UEFA Cup back in 1971-72, but England had to wait another 36 years for the next one, when Chelsea and Manchester United met in the 2008 Champions League final in Moscow, which United won on penalties.
Recent times have been dominated by English sides, with four more finals between English teams between 2019, the year both European finals were contested by English teams, and 2025.
In those six years, while there have been four all-English finals, there hasn’t been a single final in either the Champions League or Europa League involving two teams from any other nation.
After this season’s Europa League final, Tottenham will have been involved in three single-nation finals, which is the joint most alongside Chelsea, Juventus, Atlético Madrid, and Real Madrid.
All-English Finals
Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 Wolves (on agg), UEFA Cup, 1972 Manchester United 1-1 Chelsea (6-5 on pens), Champions League, 2008 Chelsea 4-1 Arsenal, Europa League, 2019 Liverpool 0-2 Tottenham Hotspur, Champions League, 2019 Chelsea 1-0 Manchester City, Champions League, 2021 Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United, Europa League, 2025Italy – Five
Most single-nation finals involving two Italian sides came in the UEFA Cup in the 1990s.
Four of the nine UEFA Cup finals between 1990 and 1998 were all-Italian affairs, with only one more in the history of the major European competitions other than that specific competition at that time.
The other one was Milan’s bore draw with Juventus in the 2003 Champions League final at Old Trafford. The lineups promised so much, with legends including Andrea Pirlo, Clarence Seedorf, Andriy Shevchenko, Alessandro Del Piero, David Trezeguet, Edgar Davids, Paolo Maldini, Lilian Thuram, Rui Costa and Gianluigi Buffon all taking to the pitch, but ultimately delivered little more than an Italian masterclass in defending from both teams, and a penalty shootout at the end of it, with the Rossoneri coming out on top.
All-Italian Finals
Juventus 3-1 Fiorentina (on agg), UEFA Cup, 1990 Inter 2-1 Roma (on agg), UEFA Cup, 1991 Parma 2-1 Juventus (on agg), UEFA Cup, 1995 Inter 3-0 Lazio, UEFA Cup, 1998 Milan 0-0 Juventus (3-2 on pens), Champions League, 2003Spain – Five
Given Spain have provided more winners of the European Cup/Champions League (20) and the UEFA Cup/Europa League (14) than any other nation, it is perhaps surprising that there have been relatively few all-Spanish finals. Arguably more surprising is that it took until 2003 for the first one to occur.
That was Real Madrid’s Champions League victory over Valencia, which got the ball rolling for Spain. The three most recent all took place in a four-year period between 2012 and 2016, and all involved Atlético Madrid.
Real Madrid, meanwhile, are the only one of the five teams to have been involved in three single-nation finals to have won all of them. Surprise, surprise.
All-Spanish Finals
Real Madrid 3-0 Valencia, Champions League, 2001 Sevilla 2-2 Espanyol (3-1 on pens), UEFA Cup, 2007 Atlético Madrid 3-0 Athletic Bilbao, Europa League, 2012 Real Madrid 4-1 Atlético Madrid (a.e.t), Champions League, 2014 Real Madrid 1-1 Atlético Madrid (5-3 on pens), Champions League, 2016Germany – Two
Germany have provided 35 finalists across the history of the European and UEFA Cups, but only two all-German finals.
The first came in the UEFA Cup in 1980, when Borussia Mönchengladbach triumphed over Eintracht Frankfurt on away goals after a 3-3 aggregate draw. Interestingly, in that year’s edition of the UEFA Cup, the two losing semi-finalists were also German sides.
The next all-German final came 33 years later, when Bayern Munich beat Borussia Dortmund 2-1 at Wembley thanks to an 89th-minute Arjen Robben winner.

Eintracht Frankfurt 3-3 Borussia Mönchengladbach (on agg, Mönchengladbach won on away goals), UEFA Cup 1980 Bayern Munich 2-1 Borussia Dortmund, Champions League, 2013Portugal – One
The only European final involving two teams from any nation other than the four above was the 2011 Europa League final between Porto and Braga. Radamel Falcao scored the only goal of the game on the stroke of half-time to win Porto a fourth European trophy.
