While Bud Hamilton lived right next door to the couple for nearly twenty years, he and his wife only shared a single meal with them, shortly after they moved in. However, Hackman recalled that he was involved with the Cancer Foundation for New Mexico and donated one of his paintings for the foundation to auction off to raise money every year, up until last, according to new reporting from the New York Times.
Hackman's artwork was also on display in a local restaurant he had invested in, while his wife had co-founded a home goods store in the area, but the two were rarely seen out and about—especially after the Covid-19 pandemic. They didn't attend HOA meetings or neighborhood picnics, and, most recently, the only sign of their existence for neighbors was the movement of their trashcans back and forth for pickup.
Helen Dufreche, a previous resident of the neighborhood, remembered the first time she met the beloved actor, who pulled up next to her and her dogs in his truck and complimented, “What cute puppies!”
Dufreche went home, she said, and told Payton, “Gene Hackman’s been talking about you.”
