Soon after the incident, Brody broke his silence on what really led him to do this, recounting his thought process to Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos backstage at the show. 

In a video that aired on LIVE with Kelly and Mark on Monday, March 3, Brody sat down with the talk show hosts to break down the moment, explaining that he "forgot" he had gum in his mouth and didn't want it to get in the way of giving his speech. 

When the incident happened live, fans immediately called out Brody for what he did, saying that it was "disrespectful" and "gross."

Brody took home the award for Best Actor for his performance in the film The Brutalist, winning over Timothée Chalamet, Sebastian Stan, Colman Domingo and Ralph Fiennes.
