Well. The Chicago Cubs will not go undefeated for the entirety of 2025, dropping today’s game to the Reds 7-3. Time to hope they are saving the rest of it for the regular season.
STILL IN FIRST PLACE IN THE CACTUS LEAGUE, THOUGH!
The big news, of course, was Matt Shaw’s spring debut after an oblique injury delayed him. He didn’t notch any hits, but he was healthy. All that matters for now, and the Cubs will decide from here whether he’s built up enough by next week to head to Japan for the season opener at mid-month.
No hits for him today, but whatever. Great to see Matt Shaw making his spring debut.

I’m a broken record, I know, but it’s because it’s just the reality: Matthew Boyd gave up some runs in his short outing, but he also showed off some nasty stuff and continued to build out his pitch count. Mission accomplished.
A day after he was optioned out from big league camp, Jack Neely struck out three in his latest appearance. Maybe he just needed to know where he stood to open the season.
Travis Jankowski recently won a championship, so he knows what he’s talking about maybe possibly probably:

— Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) March 2, 2025Jonathon Long is an infinitely more serious prospect if he can play solid defense at third and in the corner outfield spots, but handling first base well enough to be a depth option there as soon as the second half of this season would be a help:
