The Golden Arches' classic Egg McMuffin was invented by Herb Peterson in 1971 and made its nationwide debut four years later. In the five decades since, the breakfast sandwich and its variations have remained a "personal favorite" amongst customers, even earning the title "GOAT" and now recognition as a "history maker."
"When I watched my father introduce this idea to Ray Kroc, we could not have anticipated it would become the foundation for the renowned McDonald’s breakfast menu,” said son of the McMuffin inventor and McDonald’s owner/operator David Peterson in a statement. “It’s been remarkable to see people embrace this innovation over the last five decades, and now we get to share that heritage with a new generation of breakfast fans.”

To kick off what the company described as a year-long campaign, two very popular breakfast items will be expanding: McDonald's Bagel Sandwiches and its collaboration with Krispy Kreme.
McDonald's is also offering special ways to save on morning must-haves, offering app users an Egg McMuffin or Sausage McMuffin with Egg breakfast sandwich for just $1 now through National Egg McMuffin Day on Sunday, March 2. McDonald's app users can also score a BOGO Sausage McMuffin with Egg when making a McDelivery order between Monday, March 3 and Sunday, March 30.
