From Willits Center for the Arts
March will bring a focus on printmaking to the galleries at Willits Center for the Arts. Mendocino coast artist Robert Spies will present both prints and sculptures under the theme “Thieron Dreams,” which explores the close bonds between animals and the humans who are fascinated by them.
This theme has been of interest to Spies for many years, and expresses itself in his prints, paintings, and sculpture. Robert will be sharing his process and philosophy in an artist’s talk on opening night.

Another featured and somewhat rare technique is shown in the woodblock prints crafted by master printmaker Walt Padgett.
These two exhibits will open on the first Saturday in March, March 1 with the Robert Spies Art Talk and a live woodblock demo by Walt Padgett in the galleries. Walt describes the free demonstration which he will present to the interested public: “I will be demonstrating the Japanese method of woodbock printmaking which utilizes watercolor pigments. These are applied with traditional brushes and hand-burnished with a baren.” He continues, “The demo will involve a complete set of four blocks including the use of a key block, and folks will be able to see the printing process from start to finish.”
