ALDI has taken shots at a rival grocery store chain while advertising its own affordable prices.
Fans got a kick out of the company’s thinly-veiled criticism.
GettyAldi has not shied away from poking fun at its competitor[/caption]German grocery store chain Aldi has taken a playful jab at one of its competitors in a recent ad.
A fellow grocery store chain was widely mocked for its overpriced fruit, and Aldi is joining in on the fun.
The ad, posted on Aldi USA’s official Instagram page, showed two strawberries side-by-side.
One strawberry, encased in plastic, was labeled “That LA Grocer” with an $18.99 price tag.
The other, cradled delicately in a person’s hand, was labeled “ALDI” next to a $0.32 price tag.
The text at the bottom half of the ad read, “$18.99 for one berry? We would never.”
Smaller text underneath said, “Never, ever, ever,” to drive the point home.
The humorous ad was a reference to Erewhon – an upscale Los Angeles-based grocery store popular with celebrities and social media influencers.
Erewhon recently gained national attention for its $19 strawberries, which are packaged and sold individually in a plastic case like the one in Aldi’s ad.
“Fortunately you can take a bite of one of our organic strawberries for around 32 cents,” Aldi said in the post’s description.
“So keep the change. All $18.67 of it.”
The extravagantly-priced Erewhon berries were the subject of both ridicule and intrigue on the internet, with some calling it a “scam” and a product of excessive marketing.
The pricey strawberries became a viral sensation, and now even Aldi is cashing in on the trend.
FAN REACTIONS
Aldi shoppers on Instagram piled on in the comments, voicing appreciation for Aldi’s prices and sense of humor.
“ALDI THIS IS SO MESSY,” wrote one commenter with laughing emojis.
“I get whiplash from how fast Aldi is with the shade,” wrote another.
“This is great marketing Aldi, social team needs a raise,” another said.
