Ian Cunningham Gets Snubbed Again: Jaguars Hire James Gladstone as New GM ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

The good news is that Ian Cunningham is sticking around for another year to help the Chicago Bears rebuild as the right-hand man to General Manager Ryan Poles.

But the bad news is that this news comes as a result of the Jacksonville Jaguars going in another direction in their search for a new GM. NFL insiders Tom Pelissero, Ian Rapoport, and Adam Schefter are reporting that James Gladstone is Jacksonville’s hire as the team’s new general manager.

Here is the statement from Jaguars owner Shad Khan (via RapSheet):

“It’s my honor to introduce James Gladstone as the new general manager of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

James emerged as my choice, and our choice, following a painstaking but energizing interview process that left nothing to doubt.

Every candidate delivered, and I am grateful to them all for their preparation and time spent with us this week in Jacksonville. In the end, we found James to be a class ahead and exceptional in every regard – vision, new ideas, communication, chemistry and a keen understanding of the league and our team, to name a few of many virtues he will bring immediately to the Jaguars. It’s going to be fun watching James work with our football leadership team of Liam Coen, Tony Boselli and Tony Khan, but most of all it will be rewarding. I am confident of that.

This is also an occasion to thank Jaguars fans everywhere for their support and faith over the years. I know we can count on them to warmly welcome James to Duval while rallying behind our organization and team as we chart a new and promising path forward.”

Yeah, whatever. Thanks for wasting our time, Jacksonville.

Ian Cunningham remains with the Chicago Bears

As far as I’m concerned this is the perfect .gif reaction to the news:

The bad news is that Ian Cunningham doesn’t get a chance to spread his wings, fly off, and build his own team. And for the Bears, that means they will not be in line to get any compensatory picks for Cunningham’s departure. In a way, that is a double whammy of bad news. I’m sorry to be the one who has to deliver it to you.

But on the other hand, the good news is that the Bears are retaining a highly touted member of their front office. Ian Cunningham earned an extension before the 2024 NFL Draft, then saved the Bears some draft picks by being the voice of reason when GM Ryan Poles was exploring a trade-up to ensure the team would get wide receiver Rome Odunze.

Maybe there is a silver lining in this news for Ian Cunningham. Perhaps he can help build a Bears team that can produce a winning season for the first time since 2018. If he can have a hand in doing that, then I can see a scenario in which Cunningham’s name is a hot one among general manager candidates in next year’s hiring cycle. That he received multiple interviews from the Jaguars and Titans this offseason speaks to how teams think of him despite Chicago’s shortcomings and losing seasons.

But still … I’ve gotta think that this is frustrating for Ian Cunningham. To go through the process and get multiple interviews only to be told “thanks, but no thanks” again has to sting. In the end, Jacksonville’s loss is Chicago’s gain.
