It’s Day 47 of the Chicago Bears offseason. Having spring training baseball (and a Cubs win!) as a distraction on Thursday afternoon was like getting a hug from a friend you hadn’t seen for a long time. Hopefully, the Chicago Cubs will provide a fun bridge to the next football season. In the meantime, here is a collection of Bears-centric thoughts to lead you into the weekend.
I think I want Drew Dalman on the Bears in 2025 more than I want Trey Smith is a thought I had last night. After sleeping on it, I woke up feeling the same way so I knew I had to put it atop this set of BN Bears Bullets. After sorting through the revolving door of disappointment that Chicago has been trotting out at center since Cody Whitehair’s Pro Bowl season in 2018, I have concluded that getting it right at center is harder than nailing either of the guard spots. Plus, I like the secondary tier of guard options in free agency more than I like the ones at center. Also: I think the Bears would do well by drafting offensive linemen (guards or tackles) with their first three picks. This is probably worth an extended conversation in a more expansive post to be written down the line. But just know it is on my mind right now. Let me be clear before I move on with this set of Bullets: (1) I like Trey Smith, (2) Trey Smith would be a good fit for the Chicago Bears, (3) I would not be mad (not in the slightest) if the team gave Trey Smith a bag to kickstart its free-agency spending spree, and (4) Even if it isn’t Trey Smith, signing a pair of guards should be a top priority for this front office. With that being said, Drew Dalman is a perfect fit and center seems to be a tougher need to fill. So if finding starting guards is priority No. 1-A in the offseason, then signing a center should be priority No. 1-B. FWIW: It sounds like the Bears have the “inside track” among teams that aren’t the Chiefs to sign Trey Smith in free agency. Hey, maybe the Bears can land both? Or perhaps the better way to spend the cap space allotted to them this offseason is to spread the wealth, upgrade at several positions, and raise this team’s floor with good players in hopes that its stars (Caleb Williams, DJ Moore, Jaylon Johnson, Montez Sweat) can elevate things further when the time comes. One guard option you can cross off the list is Zack Martin, who reportedly has plans to tell the Dallas Cowboys he is retiring. The 34-year-old earned nine Pro Bowl trips, was a first-team All-Pro seven times, and will surely be a Hall of Famer whenever he is eligible for Canton. I tip my cap to one of the best offensive linemen to put on the pads. Former Bears quarterback Justin Fields is on Ben Solak’s list of possible NFL QB reclamation projects who are available for teams in free agency. “It is worth noting that none of the successful reclamations has been a dual-threat quarterback,” Solak writes. “so the waters are a little uncharted. But Fields still is a qualifying candidate of physical talent and inept rookie upbringing, in need of an actually dominant receiver and low expectations.” (Photo by Michael Reaves/Getty Images) Something to keep in mind: The Steelers running it back with Fields in 2025 would put the league in a position to give us a Caleb Williams vs. Justin Fields matchup early on the TV schedule next season. Pittsburgh is slated to visit Soldier Field in what could be a fun matchup between the last two first-round quarterbacks selected by Chicago’s football team.HERE’S WHO THE CHICAGO BEARS WILL PLAY IN 2025
Renovations to the Baltimore Ravens’ stadium (where the Bears will play a game next season) will cost more than expected. The original cost was estimated to be $434 million, but is now expected to cost $489 million. Considering that the Bears are still in their own stadium limbo, it is worth keeping tabs on the cost of building and renovating stadiums elsewhere. — Topps (@Topps) February 19, 2025 It turns out I’m not alone in feeling miffed about the Bears raising prices for season-ticket holders. (The Athletic, 670 The Score) Former Panthers head coach (and a Bears coaching candidate earlier in the offseason) Ron Rivera on Cam Newton’s “locker room full of losers” quote: “Sometimes things are better left unsaid,” Rivera said, via The Athletic. “And I’d loved to have seen him be a little more diplomatic. Just because a lot of those guys on that 2010 team became some of those guys that went to the Super Bowl in 2015. It’s unfortunate he made the comments and now he’s just gotta live with them and own up.”MORE AT BLEACHER NATION: Play Fantasy | Newsletter | Cubs | Bulls | Blackhawks
