“Pat Tillman’s selfless spirit and commitment to service are an inspiration to us all,” Dillingham said in a press release by the Pat Tillman Foundation. “My family, our team and our staff are honored to help kick off this amazing event that brings our community together to celebrate his legacy.”

What is Pat’s Run?

Pat’s Run, which began in 2004, honors Pat Tillman’s legacy throughout the different chapters of his life.

Tillman was killed in a friendly fire incident during his patrol in eastern Afghanistan on April 22, 2004.

Tillman played linebacker for Arizona State from 1995-1997, appearing in 33 games and recording 230 tackles. He was named Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year, first-team All-American and first-team All-Pac-10 in 1997. Tillman has his No. 42 retired by the Sun Devils.

With the Cardinals, Tillman played four seasons from 1998-2001 spanning 60 games. He recorded 374 total tackles and 2.5 sacks. His No. 40 is also retired by the Cardinals.

Tillman left football to join the Army Rangers, serving tours in Iraq in 2003 and 2004 before his death. After his passing, he was awarded a Purple Heart and a Silver Star.

Pat’s Run supports close to 1,000 Tillman scholarship recipients each year who embody his leadership, service and impact.

This year’s run will take place on April 12 and begin on East Rio Salado Parkway and South Packard Drive. It includes a wheelchair and kid’s race in addition to the traditional 4.2-mile course. The run will begin at 7:05 a.m. with the finish line set at Mountain America Stadium.

The 4.2-mile run number represents the number 42 that Tillman wore with the Sun Devils. Pat’s Run attracts over 30,000 participants each year.

Some Sun Devil football players will also be joining Dillingham during the race.

“Our players will be around,” Dillingham said. “It will be an unbelievable experience. Beautiful weather for a great cause.”
