Running back a 'position to watch' later in draft for Jaguars ...Middle East

Sport by : (jaguarswire) -

Michael DiRocco of ESPN noted in a recent article that the running back position is one to watch for the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2025 NFL draft.

“Running back is a position to watch in the mid-to-late rounds of the draft,” DiRocco wrote.

The Jaguars are positioned well at this position with both Travis Etienne and Tank Bigsby returning for the 2025 season.

However, the third spot on the depth chart is up for grabs, and the draft is also about planning ahead, and 2025 will be the final year of Etienne’s rookie deal.

In addition to all of that, this year’s running back draft class is absolutely loaded with talent and the Jaguars shouldn’t pass that up. ESPN’s Jordan Reid mentioned that he has a whopping 33 running backs with draftable grades this year, and there are also a wide variety of skill sets available as well.

Whether it be Etienne or the Jaguars add someone in the draft, a pass-catching presence out of the backfield is a key element to Liam Coen’s offense. The Bucs’ Rachaad White and Bucky Irving each ranked top 10 in receptions among running backs in 2024.

An important factor in getting the Jaguars’ offense back on track will be having a strong running game to lean on. This will keep the offense ahead of the sticks and out of predicable passing situations, along with helping to open up opportunities in the passing game.

Getting better here starts with being better in the trenches, as Liam Coen noted. Last season, the Jaguars totaled the third-fewest yards before contact, meaning that their backs had little room to operate.

With 10 selections in this year’s draft, the Jaguars are positioned well to bolster the running back room even though there may be more pressing needs elsewhere.
