The 32 NFL beat writers for The Athletic recently put together a group 2025 NFL mock draft. So who did the Jacksonville Jaguars come away with?
At pick No. 5, Jeff Howe had the Jaguars adding to the trenches and taking Michigan defensive tackle Mason Graham.
As we saw from Philadelphia in the Super Bowl, there’s no such thing as too much talent at the line of scrimmage.
“Graham can be an interior game-wrecker, and the Jaguars defense desperately needs one of those,” wrote Howe. “Graham’s push from the inside will benefit Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker off the edge, and he should help bolster a run defense that surrendered the eighth-most yards in the NFL last season and finished 24th in success rate defending the run.”
Graham is a supreme talent and is one of those players that, as Howe mentions, his presence will benefit the defenders around him as well.
A good interior defender occupies space and takes on double-teams helping to create mismatches for others to exploit. Not to mention that in Graham’s own regard, he was the ability to generate a quick push up the middle, which is the best way to wreck any offensive play.
Last season, Graham generated 34 pressures and five sacks as a pass rusher. In the run game, he ranked first among all defensive tackles in PFF’s run defense grade and was second in run-stop rate.
For more on Graham, here’s a snippet of what NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein wrote in his pre-draft report:
“Three-technique who provides activity, effort, strength and quickness. Graham’s first-step quickness makes interior disruption inevitable. He has the instant read and response to regularly beat lateral blocks. He’s stout at the point of attack with great leverage and body control but will lose some ground against double teams.”
The Jaguars’ defensive front as a unit in 2024 ranked 32nd in pass rush win rate and 27th in run stop rate. A good defensive front can provide the secondary–another need for the Jaguars–with some much-needed help.
“That’s where it starts,” said Liam Coen of the trenches. “To go win playoff games and to go and do it, you’ve got to be able to run the football and stop the run, first and foremost.”
