Entire Team Pakistan has been fined 5% if their match fees, for maintaining a slow over-rate in the opening match of the Champions Trophy 2025, vs New Zealand on Wednesday. The ICC levied the charge after Mohammad Rizwan’s team was an over short in the match, even after the time allowances.
The Article 2.22 of the ICC states that the players are liable to be fined 5% of their match fees, per over, if they fail to complete their quota of overs in the allotted time. In addition to that, the skipper pleaded guilty and accepted the sanction. Meanwhile, the charge had come from the two umpires of the match Richard Kettleborough and Sharfuddoula, and third umpire Joel Wilson and fourth umpire Alex Wharf.
As far as the first match of the Champions Trophy is concerned, hosts Pakistan lost the match by 60 runs, while chasing 321. Playing in Lahore, after batting first, the Kiwis rode on Tom Latham and Will Young’s tons to score over 300. Haris Rauf was particularly expensive on the day as he was smashed for over 80 runs in his spell.
Come the chase, Pakistan kept losing wickets regularly, while Babar Azam played a relatively slow innings, that only spoiled things further. 64 from 90 meant, that the Pakistanis were always behind in the chase. Unfortunately for the team, there was yet another blow, as swashbuckling batter Fakhar Zaman sustained an injury, and the latter was later ruled out of the tournament.
