Day 3 Prelims Heat Sheet

If you were hoping to see Gretchen Walsh try to better her NCAA record in the 100 fly, then I’m sorry to disappoint you as the “Everything Record” Holder (trademark?) has scratched out of the event. The top seed by nearly a second and a half will not have an individual race this morning. However, that said, there will be a Walsh in the 100 fly as her sister, Alex Walsh, has scratched out of the 200 free, where she was the #2 seed, and instead will look to improve upon her 18th seed in the 100 fly.

UVA saw a large contingent pull out of the 200 free, as in addition to A. Walsh, both Leah Hayes (#10) and Katie Grimes (#16) also withdrew. Their scratches should not come as much of a surprise as the pair are the 3rd and 1st seeds in the 400 IM, respectively.  With Stanford Cardinal Lillie Nordmann also withdrawing from the 200 free in favor of the 100 fly, the women’s 200 free is missing four of its top 16, meaning the event is ripe for those lower-seeded to jump up into the A and B finals tonight.

On the men’s side, the 200 free plays a very similar story as a pair of top 8 seeds, both from Cal, have opted not to take on the 200 free. The #2 and #5 seeds, Destin Lasco and Gabe Jett, will not race the event, hoping that teammates Lucas Henveaux, Robin Hanson, and Trent Frandson can take their place in the A- Final. Andrei Minakov of Stanford and David King of UVA have also pulled out of the event, with Minakov looking to improve upon his #3 seed in the 100 fly.

While there were no top 8 scratches in the 400 IM, both #11 seeds, Mira Szimcsak and Daniel Diehl, have pulled out of the event, with Diehl instead focusing on the 200 free, where he is the #10 seed.

It should be noted that Brooks Curry does not appear in the first heat of the 200 free.

P.S. Also in consideration f0r the title: Daniel not Diehling with the 400 IM
