Trevor Lawrence explains biggest difference in Jaguars' offense with Liam Coen ...Middle East

There’s going to be a lot of schematic changes on offense under new Jacksonville Jaguars’ head coach Liam Coen, but what will be the biggest difference for quarterback Trevor Lawrence?

On a recent appearance on the Up & Adams Show with Kay Adams, Lawrence was asked that question, and the answer has to do with the running game.

“Obviously there’s going to be a lot of changes in verbiage and terminology and all those things and the system is different,” Lawrence said. “But I think the run game and how it’s built off of that and I think just his knowledge on how to set up the run game with play-action, screens, and then obviously mixing in dropbacks and shots downfield.

“I think the plan there I’m really excited about how he’s going to set it up and how we’re going to game plan it.”

Before Coen was even hired, Lawrence mentioned in his end of season press conference that the Jacksonville running game had to improve if the offense was going to become less predictable.

Without a strong presence in the run game, that then puts the offense behind the sticks and in obvious passing situations, where the defense has the upper hand.

Last season, the Jaguars’ offense would rank both 19th in yards per carry and in ESPN’s run-block win rate metric. But a particularly more telling stat is that the Jaguars’ running backs totaled the third-fewest yards before contact in 2024–meaning that they were dealing with defenders early and often.

Under Coen last season, the Buccaneers’ running game had a massive turnaround, going from being among the worst in football to top-five in rushing yards per game.

Accomplishing that starts with improved offensive line play, an area that Coen did say has to improve for Jacksonville. The marrying of the running and passing games together from a schematic standpoint will also be an important element, with concepts and looks building off of each other to keep the defense off-balanced.

Coen would also mention during his introductory press conference that a good running team doesn’t only fall on the shoulders of the offensive line, but it takes buy in from all 11 players on offense.

“It takes all 11 to get better in the run game,” said Coen about the Bucs’ quick turnaround in the run game. “Mike Evans, Hall of Famer, digging out support on the front side of runs. Selflessness. The quarterback being involved.

“Everybody being involved and you started to show them examples of that, whether it’s in LA, Minnesota, Green Bay, a ton of different places run a similar system and have had similar success running the football, which now also helps the pass game, the defense, the special teams.”

When the run game is rolling, the offense then has the advantage when operating from manageable down and distances. This can then open up the playbook for Coen and opportunities in the passing game as Lawrence mentioned off  of play-action or in the screen game.

When it comes to building and implementing the new offense, including these new run game concepts, while it’s Coen’s vision, accomplishing all of this is going to be a collaborative process.

“So many guys that are experienced and can really pour into making it a collaborative process,” Lawrence added. “It’s not just one guy doing what he thinks is best, it’s a bunch of different minds, including myself trying to come up with the best plan for us.”
