Mac McClung made history on NBA All-Star Weekend.
The Orlando Magic guard became the first and only player to win three consecutive slam dunk contest titles, and he did it in serious style.
McClung pulled off a retro dunk en-route to winning this year’s contestGettyMcClung dialed up a retro move Saturday night, jumping over a silver Kia sedan that was parked under the basket, before slamming the ball through the basket.
His effort was reminiscent of Blake Griffin’s iconic 2011 dunk that won the competition that year.
And while Griffin was a household name outside of the contest, McClung hasn’t quite had the same impact on the NBA.
Most of his work has been in the G League – the NBA’s development league – where he is averaging 24.5 points, 4.3 rebounds and 6.1 assists for the Osceola Magic – Orlando’s affiliate.
But each year, on All-Star Weekend, he soars higher than most of the NBA’s biggest names.
McClung scored a perfect 50 on all four dunks this time around.
On top of his Kia stunt, he also leaped over the 6ft 11in Evan Mobley and tapped the rim with the ball, before slamming it home.
With another impressive showing, he has been credited as the man who is single-handedly saving the dunk contest.
And while he has struggled to find consistent playing time in the NBA – featuring for just five minutes for the Magic this season – McClung’s All-Star Weekend performances have provided him a nice financial boost.
This year’s victory has secured him $105,000, and McClung’s total dunk contest winnings now amount to $310,000.
McClung has become the first NBA star to three-peat in the dunk contestGetty An impressive dunk over Mobley helped secure his third-straight titleGettyThat figure is nearly three times his guaranteed career NBA earnings of $132,101.
Not bad for a weekend’s work.
According to Front Office Sports, that sum, however, does not account for two-way contracts like the one MacClung is currently on with the Magic.
He also signed two previous deals with the Los Angeles Lakers and Philadelphia 76ers, but never made it through the full season on one.
A two-way contract pays half of a rookie minimum salary – $578,577 for this season – and allow a player to spend a maximum of 45 days with the NBA team they are signed to, and the rest of the season with its G League affiliate.
Per the report from Front Office Sports, McClung was on a two-way deal with the Lakers and Sixers for roughly three months each, which puts his earnings close to his dunk contest winnings.
McClung has played just five minutes for Orlando Magic this season, but has made a lot of money from the dunk contest in recent yearsGettyIf he can finish the season with the Magic on his current two-way deal, his NBA earnings will eclipse his dunk contest winnings for the first time in his career.
And now he has made history with a three-peat, McClung may not have anything left to prove on All-Star Weekend, even though it has been a lucrative endeavor.
He admitted going into Saturday ‘thinking about hanging it up’ after 2025, but added: “I never want to say never.”
“I was extremely honored to be a part of this weekend,” McClung went on to say after his victory.
“I genuinely love this contest, and just very appreciative.”
