I have shoveled twice already today, and I hope that’s enough.
Let’s start with something to warm your heart on this otherwise chilly day:Mark Grace and Shawon Dunston surprise Ryno at spring training ? pic.twitter.com/ZorxVTVvfE
— Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) February 15, 2025 This could be one of those subtle improvements as you go into a second year with a manager (not just with Seiya Suzuki, but communication with all players):Cubs manager Craig Counsell and Seiya Suzuki are working on their communication issues: “Sometimes, the language barrier makes you lazy, unfortunately. That’s on me. I got to get way better at that. And will. That’s something that I promised Seiya.” t.co/qXD8b6v2bz

— Jordan Bastian (@bastianmlb.bsky.social) 2025-02-16T02:05:51.381Z Christian Yelich had back surgery in August to address a long-standing issue that’d given him problems for years, and he says he’s on track for a normal open to the 2025 season. Yelich, 33, was actually having a monster year before the injury shut him down, and his ability to return to that level could be a major swing factor in the Brewers once again surprising folks in 2025. Were he to do that, and were Jackson Chourio to play like he did in the second half, and were Garrett Mitchell to hit like he did in a small sample last year, the Brewers could have an outfield group that actually rivals the Cubs’ group offensively (TBD how much outfield Yelich actually plays, though). The Cubs may still be in the market for an infielder if the price is right – Justin Turner is among the specific names that has come up – but if they were ever looking at Paul DeJong, he just signed with the Nationals for one year and $1 million. That’s actually quite a bargain when you consider that DeJong, 31, has been a great defender the last four years, and actually put up a near league-average offensive line last season. That’s about as good as it gets for a minimally-priced veteran bench infielder. Wonder if that market is getting super cheap. The Tigers are trying to figure out what to do with Javy Báez, whose precipitous fall has been as well-documented as it has been sad. I didn’t realize he was still hitting lefties well in his time in Detroit, so at least there’s that. Could be a useful veteran bench player for a hard-charging Tigers team. Brewers pitching prospect Josh Knoth is undergoing Tommy John surgery. He was their first round pick in 2023 out of high school, and is top-15-ish in their system.
