MARION COUNTY, Ohio (WCMH) – A Marion County man has been charged with 18 counts of cruelty to animals after authorities found injured and dead horses at his home.
Marlin Rae Adkins, 71, was arrested after Marion County Sheriff’s deputies and a humane agent were called to the 1000 block of Decliff Road in Montgomery Township on Feb. 13 for a report of a horse stuck in a fence. Authorities said when deputies arrived, they found a horse with its front legs entangled in fencing on the property. The horse was severely emaciated, and it was apparent that the horse had been struggling to stand for a long time, according to the sheriff’s office.
A good Samaritan neighbor and deputies worked for several minutes before freeing the horse. The sheriff said a veterinarian was called to help with the horse, who had obvious injuries, and it no longer had the strength to get into a standing position. The horse was eventually euthanized on the advice of the veterinarian.
Officials say deputies also found seven dead horses with varying degrees of decay on the property. Four were found in a barn, among other living horses, and the other three were found in a pasture area.
Adkins was arrested, according to the sheriff’s office, and is charged with 18 counts of cruelty to animals and three counts of failure to register a canine.
None of the living horses and goats on the property had access to food or water, according to the sheriff’s office. Deputies did not find any grain or hay on the property and all viable water sources were frozen solid, according to authorities.
Two goats and 11 horses were rescued from the property. Authorities say all the animals were severely malnourished and emaciated.
Authorities say an investigation into the condition of the rescued animals is ongoing and additional charges may be filed in the future.
