It’s Day 41 of the Chicago Bears offseason. I began watching Taylor Tomlinson’s stand-up comedy routines around this time in 2023 at the suggestion of a friend who thought I could use a laugh. The suggestion came at a time when I was dealing with depression and anxiety. I wasn’t eating or sleeping. I was straight up having a bad time in life. But that Netflix special made me laugh for the first time in weeks. Two years later, I found myself at the Chicago Theatre (a great place to see a show!) watching Taylor Tomlinson’s “Save Me” tour. Seems fitting to me.
ICYMI: The Bears are bringing in another coach who has a history of coaching offensive linemen. Oregon State OL Coach Kyle DeVan is reportedly set to join Ben Johnson’s staff in Chicago. DeVan has coached offensive lines on the NCAA level at Oregon State (2024), Charlotte (2023), Colorado (2022), Arizona (2019-20), and Ball State (2016-18). He also has some pro experience as an assistant OL coach in 2015. Also on that 2015 Saints staff: Bears OL Coach Dan Roushar, who was New Orleans’ TEs Coach at the time. I wonder if this is set up to be an apprenticeship program for DeVan (40) under Roushar (64). In other coach-hiring news, Matt Zenitz reports (via Twitter/X) that the Bears are lining up the hiring of University of San Diego Offensive Coordinator/QB Coach Matt Aponte, whose coaching experience includes time spent at the University of Iowa from 2014-20, as well as a scouting and operations internship with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2015 and 2016. Aponte spent two seasons coaching San Diego’s tight ends before becoming the team’s offensive coordinator in 2023. Did you know USD’s mascot is the Toreros? And if you did, is it because you remembered it because that is where Chicago Cubs World Series champion Kris Bryant played his college ball? An old friend has interviewed for the Jacksonville Jaguars’ general manager job:We have completed an interview with Champ Kelly for our General Manager position. This concludes our virtual interviews and we will begin in-person interviews next week. pic.twitter.com/v1alQ8lam9
— Jacksonville Jaguars (@Jaguars) February 15, 2025 Before he was the Las Vegas Raiders’ assistant GM, Chanp Kelly was in the Bears’ organization from 2015-21. Kelly was the team’s director of pro scouting (2015-16) and assistant director of player personnel (2017-21). If you’ll recall, Kelly interviewed for the Bears GM vacancy in 2022 and received some strong co-signs from Klahlil Mack, Tarik Cohen, and Sam Acho. The vibes are still suggesting that Bears Assistant GM Ian Cunningham is the favorite, but there are some compelling names on the Jaguars’ interview list. I might need to spend some time exploring potential assistant GM candidates just in case Ian Cunningham leaves for Jacksonville. This could be a plum job for a front office employee whose stock is on the rise — especially if Bears General Manager Ryan Poles gets an extension (which is expected, by the way) to line up with Ben Johnson’s new deal. © Daniel Bartel-Imagn Images The Miami Dolphins cut ties with three veteran players, including running back Raheem Mostert — who you might recall had a brief stint with the Bears. You probably know him better for his work with the San Francisco 49ers. (ESPN) Buffalo Bills running back James Cook apparently wants a new contract worth $15 million per year. I feel as if we should see this news, acknowledge Cook’s excellence (back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing seasons, led the league in rushing scores in 2024), and use the price point being floated as a reminder that this seems to be a good draft to snag a running back. Even if Chicago doesn’t take Boise State star Ashton Jeanty, there are some impact backs who would look nice in the Bears’ backfield. Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown wants to see the NFL send his team into Philadelphia to play the defending Super Bowl champion Eagles in the Thursday night opener. That game would certainly be a doozy between the presumptive favorites to win the NFC.
