Chelsea secured their place in the knockout stage of the Club World Cup in the early hours of Wednesday morning with a 3-0 win over Tunisian side Esperance de Tunis to secure themselves a second place finish in Group D.
Enzo Maresca’s side won two of their three group games, starting the campaign with victory over Los Angeles FC before falling to a surprise defeat to Flamengo in their second match.
But their return to winning ways means the west London side prepare for their Round of 16 clash with Benfica having won 10 of their last 12 matches in all competitions, including five of their last six.
The Blues are looking to be crowned champions of the world for a second time having lifted the Club World Cup trophy in 2021.
Benfica managed to upset the odds on Tuesday night to beat Bayern Munich and finish top of Group C with seven points to their name, ahead of the German giants as well as the likes of Boca Juniors and Auckland City.
Managed by the former Wolves boss Bruno Lage, the Portuguese side kicked off their first ever Club World Cup campaign with a 2-2 draw against Boca Juniors which saw them come back from a 2-0 deficit inside half an hour.
The Lisbon side then defeated Auckland City, the semi pro side from New Zealand, by a scoreline of 6-0 before delivering one of the shocks of the tournament with a 1-0 win over a much fancied Bayern Munich side in Charlotte on Tuesday night.
Victory over the German champions means Benfica have now lost just one of their last 16 matches in all competitions, and will fancy their chances of pulling off another major scalp in the shape of Chelsea on Saturday night and book a quarter final spot against either Palmeiras or Botafogo, both of Brazil.
Chelsea have won all three of their previous meetings with Benfica, the most recent of which came in the Europa League final in Amsterdam back in 2013, though Bruno Lage is undefeated against the Blues in his managerial career across his two meetings as Wolves manager in the 2021-22 Premier League season.
