Vote centers have opened in the special election for California’s 36th State Senate District race.
Eleven vote centers — secure places where voters can drop off their ballot, obtain a replacement ballot or find other election-related assistance — open today, Feb. 15. Another 12 will open on Tuesday, Feb. 25, Election Day for the primary.

More than three dozen ballot drop boxes are also available to voters around the 36th State Senate District. These are open 24/7 until Feb. 25 when they will close at 8 p.m. A list of where these can be found on the Orange County Registrar of Voters’ website and the L.A. County Registrar-Recorder’s website.
Four candidates are facing off in the primary for the open state Senate seat: John Briscoe, a Republican and former Ocean View School District trustee; Julie Diep, a Democrat and Anaheim Elementary School District trustee; Jimmy Pham, a Democrat and attorney; and Tony Strickland, a Republican and member of the Huntington Beach City Council.
SD-36 follows the Orange County coast from Seal Beach down to San Clemente, jutting inland to include portions of Buena Park, Cypress, Fountain Valley, Garden Grove, La Palma, Los Alamitos, Stanton and Westminster in Orange County. The district also includes Artesia, Cerritos and Hawaiian Gardens in Los Angeles County.
The top two vote-getters, regardless of party, will advance to the April 29 general election — unless one candidate is able to receive 50% plus one vote in February’s primary election, thus becoming the winner outright.
The Orange County vote centers opening today are available from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. The Los Angeles County vote center is open from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. On Election Day, they are all open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
