TARGET has had to apologize to its loyal customers as the retailer grapples with the egg shortage that has hit the nation.

Almost 150 million birds have been culled since the H5N1 strain first reached American shores in 2022.

And, stats from the US Agriculture Department revealed more than 23 million birds were killed in the last month.

Demand for the household staple is outweighing supply, driving prices up.

A panic-buying culture, last seen in the early stages of the pandemic, has swept the nation as frenzied shoppers fight to grab the last remaining crates.

It’s prompted grocery store chains and other retailers to impose restrictions.

Apology notes have been put on store shelves.

“We are currently experiencing high demand and supplier shortages for eggs,” a note in a Wisconsin Target store seen by Business Insider said.

“We are actively seeking additional supply. We apologize for any inconvenience.”

But Target appears not to have imposed limits on the number of egg purchases yet.

Costco bosses have resorted to implementing a limit of three eggs.

And, Trader Joe’s shoppers have been warned they can only buy a maximum of a dozen eggs.

The company is limiting shoppers to one carton of eggs per day.

Whole Foods shoppers can only buy three cartons and Sam’s Club shoppers have also been met with restrictions.

Shoppers can only buy a maximum of two cartons.

But, Walmart appears to be an exception as a spokesperson told Insider a limit hadn’t yet been imposed.

Restrictions haven’t been rolled out at H-E-B stores in Texas either.

Restaurant chains have had to take action in response to the shortage.

A 50 cent surcharge per egg has been introduced at Waffle House locations.

Egg prices have hit a record high as the average cost of a carton of 12 grade A eggs now stands at $4.95 for January.

In December last year, the price was $4.15, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Egg prices jumped by more than 15% in the last month.

Shoppers face having to pay prices of $9.52 for a carton of 18 cage-free large eggs from a Walmart store in Chico, California, per Fox Business.

In January 2024, a pack of 12 grade A eggs would set shoppers back an average of $2.52.

The rising cost of eggs is just one domestic challenge facing Donald Trump and his new administration.

In August 2024, he promised to bring down prices on the first day of his administration.

Vice president JD Vance warned that it may take a bit of time for prices to start coming down.
