We are three days into the post-Super Bowl NFL offseason schedule and I have already learned one thing — it is never too early to include the Chicago Bears in a hypothetical scenario.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter shares his belief that the Bears would make a compelling case and be an ideal opponent for the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 1. Check out the video from Schefty:
When the NFL sits down to mull its options for the 2025 regular-season opener, the Bears at the Eagles will have a compelling case.? t.co/TL1EPjZy1c pic.twitter.com/Z9B2kwjYVo

“The Chicago Bears, in my mind, become the matchup to watch for that Thursday night opener. I can totally see it now. Ben Johnson’s first game in Philadelphia. Bears looking to make a comeback. It’s not the marquee matchup you’re giving away early on when you’re going to get the ratings anyway, but it’s a compelling enough matchup that everybody would be excited to see it. My guess is Bears at Eagles in the opener.”
CHICAGO BEARS 2025 SCHEDULE: HERE IS WHO THEY’LL PLAY NEXT YEAR
We discussed the Eagles-Bears Week 1 opener as a possibility when we looked at the team’s list of opponents in 2025. This is what we had to say on the matter:
The schedule note that stands out to me is that there is a non-zero chance that the Chicago Bears will be the opposition for the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 1 for the Thursday Night Football opener. Sure, the league’s television partners and schedule-makers might put the Washington Commanders in that spot. I wouldn’t mind seeing the Dallas Cowboys presented as a sacrificial lamb in Week 1. Maybe the Detroit Lions could make sense as an option, too.
I hadn’t really thought about the Denver Broncos or Las Vegas Raiders as options. But Schefter name-checks those teams, both of whom make sense and have a case to be the Eagles’ Week 1 opponent in 2025. But with that being said, there is no denying that a matchup between Chicago and Philly would be the most compelling. Not only for both fanbases locally, but it would also have a broader appeal. Not only are fans of teams who are rivals of the Bears and Eagles tune in, but I’d bet fans of teams who missed out on the Ben Johnson Sweepstakes would also watch with some curiosity. The more I think about it, the more I like it.
A Bears-Eagles Week 1 showdown would be fun
The NFL schedule release won’t drop until May. It usually comes out the week after the NFL Draft, but sometimes the wait is a little longer. And that is to be expected when your league continues to add international games that complicate game schedules, travel schedules, and television schedules. There are so many moving parts to account for when building a schedule, so it leads me to give the league some wiggle room.
With that being said, I’m torn about how this could go. On the one hand, I would gladly embrace the challenge — even if there is a real risk that the Bears aren’t ready for primetime. But on the other hand, I wonder if the league would consider giving Chicago a Week 1 home opener so it can give a proper salute to team matriarch Virginia Halas McCaskey, who passed away last week. It is possible that the NFL could give the Bears the best of both worlds with a Week 1 game on Thursday in Philly that provides the team extra time to prep with a mini-bye ahead of a Week 2 home game.
In any case, I am interested to see where the chips fall.
