The running back’s ability to impact the passing game is going to be an important element to Liam Coen’s offense with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Looking back at the 2024 Tampa Bay Buccaneers, running backs Rachaad White and Bucky Irving were not only impactful players in the ground game, but in the passing game as well.
White would finish the season with 53 receptions, 407 receiving yards, and six touchdowns through the air. Brooks, meanwhile, caught 49 passes for 398 yards with one touchdown, according to PFF.
Compared to the rest of the NFL, White would rank ninth among all running backs in receptions and Irving was 10th. White would also finish ninth in yards and Irving 11th.
Having this element baked into the offense is just something else that defenses have to prepare for. It can also help spread the defense out as they now really have to defend the entire field and it can add some unpredictability to an offense with the running back able to effectively fill multiple roles.
While not to the extent of White and Irving, Travis Etienne saw his share of opportunities as a pass-catcher last season, ranking 22nd among running backs with 39 receptions. Tank Bigsby, however, had only seven receptions.
This year’s running back draft class is absolutely loaded. ESPN draft analyst Jordan Reid mentioned that he has a whopping 33 running backs with draftable grades.
With Etienne and Bigsby both returning for the 2025 season, running back certainly isn’t a pressing need for the Jaguars, but with so much talent in this year’s class along with Jacksonville having 10 selections, I would be shocked if they don’t make an addition here.
The Jaguars will want a well-rounded back who is not only a pass-catching threat, but some of the draft eligible running backs who were targeted heavily in the passing game in 2024 include LeQuint Allen (Syracuse), Jaydon Blue (Texas), Jo’quaviouius Marks (USC), and Elijah Young (Western Kentucky).
