What’s the ‘dirty soda’ trend? Find out in Newport Beach ...Middle East

News by : (The Orange County Register) -

When school gets out, the line really starts to form at the Kickstand Soda Shop, a new dirty soda pit stop attached to 20th Street Beach and Bikes on Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach.

While there isn’t an exact definition, dirty sodas are typically made by combining alcohol-free carbonated beverages with creams, flavored syrups and/or fruit juices. The trend, popular with teens, has its roots in Utah, where much of the state’s famously LDS population abstain from alcohol. The sweet drink became a viral sensation in 2022 thanks to TikTok and Instagram, as well as appearing in Hulu’s “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” which documents the lives of MomTok creators.

“I grew up in Newport Beach, but I’ve lived in Utah for the past 15 years, where my family and I have embraced the local love for dirty sodas,” said Mike Hancock, owner of the Kickstand Soda Shop and 20th Street Beach and Bikes. “Over the years, I noticed a trend where many of my spring break and summer customers were from Utah and Arizona, where dirty sodas are a staple.”

On Jan. 4, Hancock opened the Kickstand in the same building as his Balboa Boulevard bike shop, with a positive response from a newfound customer base. “What started as a fun addition to my bike shop has quickly become a local hit,” he said. “My daughter, Avery, played a huge role in branding and perfecting our flavors.”

Noting that the “response has been beyond what I ever expected,” Hancock credits his team for helping turn the adorable shop into an overnight success. “My Marketing Manager, Emma Rodriguez, has been the driving force behind our social media growth, creating content that went viral on opening day and continues to bring in new customers.”

Soda bases at the Kickstand include Coca Cola, Diet Coke, Mountain Dew, Sprite, root beer, Dr. Pepper and lemonade in small (12 ounce, $2.75), medium (16 ounce, $3.25) and large (24 ounce, $3.95) sized. For an extra $3, Red Bull is also available should you feel the need for proverbial speed.

Add-in flavors include blackberry, strawberry, cherry, vanilla, coconut and peach (50 cents each), and lemon or lime (25 cents); creams and purees include vanilla, coconut and raspberry (75 cents each).

Should you want to try one of Kickstand’s customized dirty beverages, customers can order from a handful of tasty concoctions like the Surf’s Up (featuring coconut Red Bull with strawberry and raspberry puree), the Paddle Board (Coke with blackberry, vanilla, cream and fresh lemon), the Dirty Classic (Diet Coke with coconut, cream and fresh lime), and the Palm Tree (Mountain Dew with peach, strawberry and coconut cream), to name a few.

The Kickstand also creates a special drink of the month, with February’s dirty soda, fittingly, being a Valentine’s Day-forward Sunkissed Chocolate, featuring root beer with cherry and chocolate cream.

Hancock said he hopes to open another location at one of his other bike shop locations in the future. “With such a strong start, I plan to expand, ensuring more and more people experience dirty sodas done right,” he said. “I can’t wait to see where it goes next!”
