Angel City Football Club announced the addition of Iceland national team forward Sveindís Jónsdóttir through the 2027 season.
Jónsdóttir, 23, recently played at VfL Wolfsburg in Germany, where she spent the past four seasons making 93 appearances with 22 goals and 16 assists.
“We are delighted to welcome Sveindís to Angel City,” ACFC Sporting Director Mark Parsons said in a statement. “She is a key signing for us as a dynamic attacking player who has consistently impacted the biggest games in UEFA Champions League and at the international level.
“She has important qualities with and without the ball that will complement our group of forwards while also bringing an incredible work ethic and hunger to win. At 23 years of age, we believe Sveindís can have an instant impact while continuing to grow and develop at our club over many years.”
Jónsdóttir will occupy one of ACFC’s international spots and will join the club following the conclusion of the UEFA European Championship in July.
Gilles transferred to Bayern Munich
Vanessa Gilles, who was one of Angel City’s first acquisitions during its inaugural season, will move to Bayern Munich as part of a transfer July 1, after her loan at Lyon concludes.
Gilles has been on loan at Lyon since 2022 and it was extended through 2025.
Angel City will receive an undisclosed transfer fee for Gilles, who scored Angel City’s first regular-season goal April 29, 2022.
National team call-ups
Both Alyssa and Gisele Thompson will depart for the senior national team for friendlies against China on May 31 in Minnesota and June 3 against Jamaica in St. Louis.
Gisele Thompson will get a look this camp at a winger position, instead of her customary outside back spot.
A U.S. U-23 camp will take place in Germany, with Angel City goalkeeper Angelina Anderson and forward Riley Tiernan called in to join. The U.S. will face Germany on May 30 and June 2.
Midfielder Kennedy Fuller will depart with the U.S. U-20 team for the upcoming CONCACAF Championship in Costa Rica. Games begin May 30.
