I am coming around to the idea of Ashton Jeanty lining up next to Caleb Williams in the Chicago Bears backfield.
Don’t get it twisted. I know the Bears have needs in the trenches on both sides of the line of scrimmage. But if General Manager Ryan Poles can plug those holes in March when free agency opens its doors, then it could open things up for the team to go in any number of different directions when the NFL Draft kicks off in April. And that is something to keep in mind, especially since one of the draft’s top running back prospects is already envisioning the Bears as a possible landing spot.
While speaking on NBC Sports’ Fantasy Football Happy Hour, Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty imagines himself being drafted by the Bears with the No. 10 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, saying that Chicago “might be a nice destination” for the Heisman Trophy finalist. And with good reason.
The Bears have quarterback Caleb Williams entering the second year of his rookie contract, a set of solid pass catchers including Rome Odunze, DJ Moore, and Cole Kmet, and an offensive-leaning head coach in Ben Johnson, whose offense put up dazzling numbers while he was the offensive coordinator of the Detroit Lions. What the Bears don’t have that the Lions do is a dynamic running back who can keep defenses honest. Ashton Jeanty fits the bill here.
Is Ashton Jeanty a fit for the 2025 Chicago Bears?
Don’t get me wrong. D’Andre Swift and Roschon Johnson are nice players. And I will have full confidence in Ben Johnson to make it work if the Bears break camp with that tandem in the backfield. That said, I am always open to Chicago’s football team adding impact players to its offense. And Ashton Jeanty sure looks like an impact player.

Back in January, we discussed a CBS Sports mock draft from Mike Renner that had Ashton Jeanty landing in Chicago with the No. 10 overall pick. This is what I was thinking at the time:
On the one hand, the logical-thinking part of my brain believes there is no way the Bears would use a top-10 pick on a running back. Taking a running back when an offensive line prospect such as Oregon’s Josh Conerly Jr. (Oregon) or a defensive line prospect like Tennessee’s James Pearce Jr. is still on the board would cause Bears fans craving upgrades in the trenches to implode. But on the other hand, the logical thinker in me knows that the Bears do not think logically — which means it is important to be prepared for the unexpected.
For instance, in a scenario in which the likes of LSU’s star offensive lineman Will Campbell, Texas standout offensive lineman Kelvin Banks Jr., stud Georgia EDGE prospect Mykel Williams, and Michigan defensive lineman Mason Graham are off the board, it would behoove us to prepare for the possibility of Chicago’s front office doing something that would be deemed unpopular, unconventional, and even unfathomable. This is the Bears we’re talking about, folks. Nothing should be viewed as being off the table.
At the time, I thought it felt unfathomable to consider that a possibility. A little less than a month later, I am just about ready to change my tune. Because if the Bears can fill in two starting spots along the offensive line and reel in an impact player who upgrades the defensive line, it would open the door to drafting the best player available with the No. 10 overall pick. And that player very well could be Jeanty.
Ultimately, I feel we’ll have a clearer idea of how the Bears will use their draft picks after some of the smoke clears after the outset of free agency. But with that being said, I find myself more open to the idea of the Bears bolstering their offense by drafting Ashton Jeanty — but only after significantly upgrading the offensive line.
If Chicago can pull it off, then it could field one of the league’s most proficient offenses. We have seen how an elite running back can impact a game this year with Derrick Henry of the Baltimore Ravens and Saquon Barkley of the Philadelphia Eagles. We could be in the running back renaissance, and I do not want the Bears to miss the boat if that happens, so I hope Ashton Jeanty is on their radar.
