Pat Surtain II has been named NFL Defensive Player of the Year for his efforts during the 2024-25 season.
Surtain becomes the first-ever former Alabama player to win the award. He recorded 45 tackles, 11 pass deflections, 4 interceptions and scored a touchdown this season while helping to lead the Denver Broncos the postseason.
Surtain’s win was announced during the annual NFL Honors award show on Thursday night.

— NFL (@NFL) February 7, 2025This is the first major individual honor of Surtain’s NFL career. While he had an excellent rookie season back in 2021, he lost Defensive Rookie of the Year honors to Cowboys star linebacker Micah Parsons. Surtain has made 3 Pro Bowls and has been named first-team All-Pro twice in his 4-year career so far.
It’s somewhat rare for a cornerback to take home this award. He’s the first to do so since Stephon Gilmore won it with the New England Patriots in 2019. Before Gilmore, no cornerback had won DPOY since Charles Woodson in 2009.
Surtain edged out plenty of top competition for the award. Bengals defensive lineman Trey Henderickson, Browns defensive lineman Myles Garrett and Steelers linebacker TJ Watt all received significant support in this year’s race.
Surtain played in the postseason for the first time in his career this season. He recorded 5 tackles in a loss to the Buffalo Bills. This was Denver’s first postseason appearance since 2015-16.
