Chicago Bears 2024 Exit Interviews: Terell Smith ...Middle East

The nightmare that was the 2024 Chicago Bears season is over. Before the transactional period starts and the roster changes begin, we will recap the seasons of most of the 53-man roster. Next up: We’re looking at the 2024 season of Terell Smith.

Terell Smith’s 2024 Snapshot

Ryan Poles’ tenure as Chicago Bears general manager has been one full of extremes. The trade that resulted in DJ Moore, Caleb Williams, and more coming to Chicago was excellent (with some incredible luck sprinkled in). His work in building the offensive line has been awful. But some less extreme wins and losses have been sprinkled in here and there. I would consider Terell Smith one of those wins at this point.

Smith, a fifth-round selection out of Minnesota by Poles and his staff in 2023, was thrust into a more prominent role in his second season thanks to Tyrique Stevenson’s regrettable role in the Fail Mary. Smith didn’t miss when presented with an opportunity to earn a more significant role in Chicago’s secondary.

Before Week 8, Smith played one defensive snap and was inactive for three games. After Week 8, he averaged 23 snaps per contest and logged a season-high 47 snaps against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 12. In Week 9, when he started instead of Stevenson in Arizona, Smith recorded a stellar 91.4 coverage grade at PFF and logged a pass breakup. He recorded his first interception in Week 11 against the Green Bay Packers.

Terell Smith’s workload this season was limited to 207 snaps, which ranked 134th among 223 cornerbacks at PFF. But his overall grade of 78.5 would have ranked eighth among cornerbacks who played at least 200 snaps during the 2024 season. Smith was stellar in a limited role in Chicago’s Week 18 win against the Packers and allowed opposing quarterbacks a 63.8 passer rating in 121 coverage snaps in 2024.

Contract Status

Smith is entering the third year of his rookie contract—which runs through 2026—and is set to make $1.098 million in 2025.

Turning the Page

The fifth-round cornerback out of Minnesota has proven to be an excellent find for Poles and his staff and stepped into an expanded role this season when the Bears needed it. While Tyrique Stevenson should probably be considered the frontrunner for the starting job opposite Jaylon Johnson next season, there will surely be a competition between these two in training camp, and I wouldn’t bet against Smith, who has made strides in each of his first two seasons in Chicago.
