Susan Trumble’s poker group experienced an unexpected loss when one of their friends died in 2021.
To help with the services, a member of the group — which plays in a league in the Rocky Mountain Poker Venues — suggested they host a poker fundraiser. The group raised enough money to pay for a headstone.
“Really, that’s how all this started,” Trumble said.
That experience transformed how Trumble views the game. She realized it can be a meaningful way to deal a helpful hand to those in need.
Since then, Trumble, who many know as “Momma Sue,” has helped more than a dozen people with medical bills, funeral expenses and similar matters in Northern Colorado with her organization, Poker4aCause.
“Every game has been wonderful. We have so much fun doing this,” Trumble said.

(Jim Rydbom/Staff Photographer)Soon, Poker4aCause will be able to broaden its outreach when it becomes an official nonprofit. At the suggestion of a poker player Trumble knows, she’s pursuing becoming an official 501(c)(3) nonprofit. That player even gifted Trumble $365 to start the legal process.
Once everything’s official, Trumble will serve as the executive director, and her poker friend Sheri Vasquez will serve as executive vice president alongside Tammie Chaffins. Creating an official nonprofit has been a dream of theirs, Trumble said.
Among Poker4aCause’s recent beneficiaries is Leah Neugebauer, a Greeley bartender who’s been recovering from shooting injuries she sustained last November when a 32-year-old man fired 59 rounds into Wyler’s Pub and Grill after they had closed.
Jimmy Cazares faces multiple felony charges for the shooting, including two counts each of attempted first-degree murder after deliberation and attempted first-degree murder due to extreme indifference. He has a preliminary hearing 3 p.m. Wednesday.

For the past few years, Trumble and her Poker4aCause organization have helped dozens of people in Northern Colorado. Trumble is on track to make Poker4aCause an official nonprofit. (Courtesy of Susan Trumble)In February, Trumble hosted a poker fundraiser for Neugebauer, bringing in poker tables and accessories. Trumble also told players to bring snacks for Neugebauer’s children — and they delivered, filling up the Neugebauers’ family truck.
“She’s just a sweet lady,” Neugebauer said. “She’s always wanting to help people. (She’s) really selfless. She’s just always onto helping the next person. She doesn’t try to really get anything out of it.”
Neugebauer returned to work at Wyler’s in March. She’s taking life day by day, she said, but the shooter “messed up a lot of stuff for me.” Moving forward, though, anytime Momma Sue needs help with a poker fundraiser, Neugebauer will have her back, she said.
Making friends like Neugebauer and other influential people has been one of the highlights of Trumble’s work over the past few years, she said. She can scroll through her phone contacts, knowing every person in there will be ready to help her at the drop of a poker chip.
Official nonprofit status will help Poker4aCause expand their reach, Trumble said. This could potentially open doors for her to speak with big businesses about helping with the poker fundraisers. She anticipates landing bigger businesses once she’s able to provide them with their official tax deduction.
Trumble will host a poker fundraiser to help cover the filing fees at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 21, at Pierce Place (formerly Grubby’z), 123 Main St., Pierce. The poker games start at noon. It’s a suggested $40 donation that includes bounty.
Moving forward, Poker4aCause will outline a selection process to determine what causes they can support.
Trumble said anyone can call her at 970-539-1888 or email at coolmom6431@yahoo.com to suggest a person, family or cause in need of Poker4aCause. Or people can ask around the community on how to get hold of her.
“Everybody knows Momma Sue,” she said.
