In 1989, the team was looking to win their third straight title, so Riley filed a trademark for “three-peat.”
He was granted the trademark, which covers merchandise like hats, shirts, jackets, and more.
The Lakers lost the NBA finals in 1989, but the “three-peat” trademark still ended up paying off for Riley.
In 1993, the Chicago Bulls pulled off a three-peat and Riley made around $300,000 from his trademark.
The, the Bulls pulled off another three-peat in 1998 and Riley made another $600,000 off the trademark.
According to sports reporter Joe Pompliano, that $600,000 would be $1.2 million today when adjusted to inflation.
There is no telling how much merchandise could be sold if the Chiefs secured a three-peat, but it appears the NFL is getting ahead of the curve.
According to cllct’s Darren Rovel, the NFL has struck a deal with Riley to use the “three-peat” phrase on merchandise if the Chiefs win Super Bowl LIX.
It is unclear how much the league is paying for the usage of the trademark.
NFL fans are skeptical about this trademark move though, with some fans claiming that the league is indicating that the Chiefs will win the Super Bowl.
“Spoilers, bro,” one fan said.
“Silly that this can happen,” another fan said.
“What a freaking joke. I know they aren’t going to lose but now more than ever I hope they do. Give me a break,” a third fan said.
“That is the silliest thing I’ve ever heard,” a fourth fan said.
“This isn’t going to help the NFL rigged debates,” a fifth fan said.
The Chiefs are hoping they will need to pay for Riley’s trademark after they play the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX.
The game is being played in New Orleans at the Caesar’s Superdome.
If the Chiefs win, it will be Patrick Mahomes‘ fourth Super Bowl title.
If the Eagles win, it will be the franchise’s second Super Bowl title.
