The Prebys Foundation awarded a grant to MiraCosta College in January to set up a mental health and wellness project of formerly incarcerated and marginalized students.
Worth $116,500, the grant was among over $5 million that The Prebys Foundation awarded to 59 nonprofits across San Diego. The foundation said spending time in nature and engaging with the arts can help reduce social isolation and improve mental health.
“By investing in this initiative, we are working with an exceptional array of organizations to harness San Diego’s unique natural and artistic resources on behalf of resilience and well-being,” said The Prebys Foundation CEO Grant Oliphant.
The grant will create the Seeding Justice Empowerment Circles project, targeted for low-income students, foster youth, veterans and groups often facing limited access to green spaces. The project will offer immersive natural experiences, including within MiraCosta College’s Roots of Justice community garden.
Students will participate in two-hour empowerment circle sessions twice each semester by members from the Roots of Justice project, which combines gardening practices with mental wellness.
