STEPHEN A. SMITH was left stunned on live TV by what Cam Newton said to him.
Smith was introducing the debate over which means most – winning MVP or clinching the Super Bowl on a recent episode of First Take.
Stephen A Smith was left stunned at how Cam Newton responded to himFacing the camera, the 57-year-old presenter said: “It doesn’t matter, it pales into comparison to a Championship.
“We’ve got a former league MVP right here on the set right now, Cam.
“I ask you Cam, if you could gve back that league MVP for a Super Bowl Championship, would you do it?”
However Smith did NOT get the answer he was expecting.
Newton responded with a blunt “no” as he shook his head.
Smith recoiled, lifted his head, widened his eyes and said: “Really?”
Newton continued: “That was a very journalistic viewpoint, vantage point or response Stephen A.
“I ask you this question, just to pose this thought. What’s more important, impact or Championships?”
The NFL leader in career quarterback rushing touchdown added that he believes winning an MVP means the player “has held his end of the bargain down” in leaving a legacy in the sport.
And interestingly, many people on social media agreed with the 35-year-old legend.
One fan wrote on X: “Props to Cam for answering truthfully.
“Being a MVP will mean more money & opportunities in your career. A handful of players win a ring
Only one wins a MVP each year.
Another posted: “I agree with Cam but I’d say it differently if I’m interpreting his logic correctly.
“A, would you rather be a part of a Super Bowl winning team?
“Or B, have an impactful, lucrative football career with MVP award?
“The best option is BOTH like he said. But most people choose B.”
Cam Newton is never shy to voice his opinionBut some criticised Newton’s answer, even going so far as saying ot showed he “wasn’t a team guy”.
Andy Morales wrote: “He doesn’t feel it is a team sport.”
And another was shocked with his words, adding: “He is more worried about his individual award than the ULTIMATE team award in the NFL.”
Lamar Jackson won his third MVP award from a select group, but rival Josh Allen could still win the war.
The Baltimore Ravens star quarterback claimed the prize after his team lost to Allen‘s Buffalo Bills in the playoff Divisional Round last weekend.
What happens to the fine money?
THE NFL regularly fines athletes tens of thousands of dollars every week during the season.
But where does the money go?
The NFL claims about $4 million a year has been used to support worthy causes since 2011.
According to the NFL operations website, “The fines collected are donated to the Professional Athletes Foundation to support Legends in need and the NFL Foundation to further support the health, safety and wellness of athletes across all levels, including youth football and the communities that support the game.”
However, there’s still optimism for Allen to earn the NFL’s most esteemed award, the AP 2024 NFL MVP prize.
Allen, Jackson, Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley, Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, and Detroit Lions signal-caller Jared Goff are among the finalists for the award.
The winner will be announced at the NFL Honors on February 6 ahead of Super Bowl 59.
Unfortunately for Allen, Jackson’s PFWA MVP win is an indication that he will be named the league’s MVP.
