Infielder Jorge Polanco is off the board, as he’s re-signing with the Mariners on a one-year, $7.75 million deal. The switch-hitting utilityman was theoretically on the Cubs’ radar as a bench option, but I suspect they aren’t looking to go to quite that price level for a bench guy. With the Mariners, Polanco is expected to be the starting third baseman.
Interesting thing: the Astros were reportedly the other main suitor for Polanco, and if they’d signed him, apparently they would’ve been out on Alex Bregman. Polanco was going to play second base, with Isaac Paredes staying at third (and Christian Walker at first), and Jose Altuve moving out to left field. It’s a variation on what the Astros plan to do if they can retain Bregman, but it’s kind of wild to hear they were going to do it for Polanco.
The question now is whether that pursuit was just designed to be further pressure on Bregman to get him to re-sign, or if the Astros really were trying to figure out something else. Do they figure they won’t be able to sign him? Are other landing spots more likely for Bregman? I have made my Cubs doubts pretty clear at this point, but if the Astros were taken off the table, obviously it makes Bregman having to take a shorter-term deal with a team like the Cubs more plausible (if still unlikely).
But the Astros didn’t get Polanco anyway, so maybe none of that matters now. If the Astros are still willing to offer their previously-reported six years and $156 million, man, Bregman just needs to take that at this point.
All that said, if there was some kind of real market relationship between Bregman and Polanco – and, again, The Athletic report suggests there was via the Astros – maybe there is going to be movement on the Bregman front soon. The same report lists the Astros, Tigers, Red Sox, Blue Jays, and Cubs as the teams involved, per two league sources.
